Van Gogh tried several different professions, but these careers were unsuccessful. After working as an art dealer, school teacher and lay preacher, Vincent van Gogh devotes himself to becoming an artist at the age of 27. In people and nature, he seeks the spiritual dimension that he believes to be God. Helene Kröller-Müller, the museum's founder, recognises herself in this and she develops a great love for Van Gogh's work. She considers him ‘one of the great spirits of modern art’. It is thanks to her efforts that the museum has such a large and impressive painting collection today.
