New Babylon

Constant (Amsterdam 1920 – Utrecht 2005) works on his New Babylon, a city of the future, from 1956 to 1974. With an almost boundless imagination he realizes one of the most visionary art projects of the twentieth century.

Man the Player

As a result of complete automation, the inhabitants of New Babylon no longer have to work. Freed from labour and possessions the inhabitants, the Homo Ludens (Man the Player), lead a nomadic life. ‘Without the restrictions imposed by work, moving around becomes more important than staying put,’ states Constant in 1980. He makes countless drawings, photographic collages, paintings, sculptures and maquettes for this utopian society. Nébulose mécanique from 195 is one of the many New Babylon-models.
