Seeking for new ground in art
The exhibition Ensemble brings together the work of six artists from the museum’s collection. Driven by the optimism of the 1960s, these artists sought new ground in art. Ad Dekkers (1938-1974), Gerhard von Graevenitz (1934-1983), Ellsworth Kelly (1923), François Morellet (1926), Jan Schoonhoven (1914-1994) and Jesús Rafael Soto (1923-2005) experimented independently with colour, form, light, movement, structure and chance. They literally discarded the boundaries of the painting, the relief or the sculpture in order to create an opening, not only to the space around us, but also to the inner space of memory and imagination.
Elsworth Kelly
Series of five paintings by Ellsworth Kelly, the only American in this gathering of Europeans, assumes a special place in Ensemble. The five canvases, each comprising two contrasting, monochrome fields of colour, are spread throughout the exhibition, in accordance with the artist’s wishes.
